Ethics and Sustainability

Although imported natural stone is often chosen because of its cost effectiveness, one should also consider how it was obtained and produced. At Oakville Stone, before choosing any stone to incorporate into our portfolio, we have strict guidelines in place to ensure that the stone is both environmentally sustainable and ethically produced.

When choosing our product lines, considerations over the entire procurement cycle of natural stone come into play. From how the stone is located to the use of raw material, including fossil fuel energy in manufacturing and transportation, it is our duty to ensure that sustainable practices and guidelines are met at every step of the way.

At Oakville Stone, Ethical Trade is at the core of our business relationships. This means that everyone we do business with – retailers‚ merchants and their suppliers – must take responsibility for providing acceptable working conditions based on global trade and human rights standards.

Ideally, our choice suppliers are ones that are up to the Ethical Base code in full – a standard created by The Ethical Trading Initiative. Main criteria of the Ethical Base Code include:

  • There is no forced or bonded labor.
  • Workers are free to leave their employers after reasonable notice.
